Simple: one morning I went to take a shower and found flies feeding on the tiny food particles trapped in the bristles of my cousin's toothbrush. It was one of those moments where you think of all the other times you've seen a fly in your home and your bathroom. And you think about what they've been up to. About how many times their germ-infected feet have been stamping their germ-infested vomit into your toothbrush. And that doesn't bear thinking about. I went to buy something to prevent this from happening. There was a spray to disinfect your bristles but we saw that as closing the stable door after the horse has bolted (we're more into prevention), and you can buy caps to clip over your brush head. These will stop the flies and particles of faeces and urine landing on your bristles but, to us, they're just damp, dark places for germs to breed. We decided that, as we couldn't find anything we felt solved the problem, we would make something.
